What the Qur’an and Sunnah Say
The Messenger of Allah said, “There are seven kinds of martyrs other than those killed in the way of Allah. Someone who dies by plague is a martyr, someone who drowns is a martyr, someone who dies of pleurisy (lung infection) is a martyr, someone who dies of stomach disease is a martyr, someone who dies by burning is a martyr, someone who dies under a falling building is a martyr, and a woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr.” (Muwatta #558)
Allah’s Messenger asked: “Who do you consider to be a martyr?” They said: “O Allah’s Prophet, he who is killed fighting for the cause of Allah.” The Prophet said: “Then very few in my Ummah will be martyrs!” They asked: “Who else are they, O Allah’s Messenger?” He said: “He who is killed fighting for Allah’s cause is a martyr, he who dies in the cause of Allah is a martyr, he who dies in an epidemic is a martyr, he who dies from a stomach disease is a martyr, and the one who dies of drowning is (also) a martyr.” (Muslim #891)
