It is somewhat disliked (makruh) to pluck out gray or white hair from your head, beard, or moustache for beautification. Gray or white hair is often seen as a sign of maturity in this world and instills respect and honor, and also reminds you that you are getting closer to death through old age.
What the Qur’an and Sunnah Say
The Messenger of Allah said, “Do not pluck out gray/white hair. A believer’s hair does not turn gray in Islam, except that it will be a light for him on the Day of Judgment…for each grey hair, Allah will write one good deed for him and pardon one wrong of his.” (Abu Dawud #4199)
The Messenger of Allah prohibited the plucking of grey hair, and said, “It is the light of a Muslim.” (Tirmidhi #2821)
What the Scholars Said
Imam An-Nawawi clarified that it is disliked but not prohibited, so it is not sinful. (Al-Minhaj Sharh Sahih Muslim #2341)
